Shape Attributes: Dashing Shape Artist! (Gr. 1-2)
Description
In this lesson, students will identify and draw shapes. Students will then work in small groups to construct an attachment for Dash to hold a marker and program Dash to draw each shape according to its attributes.
Objectives
- Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or equal faces
- identify squares, circles, rectangles, triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and rhombi (or teacher may determine 2D shapes used for this lesson)
- program Dash to draw a shape based on a prescribed set of attributes using Blockly
- program movement, turns, and loops
- design an accessory for Dash to draw a shape
Lesson Procedure
- Class 1: Building the Attachment (30 minutes)

- Pre-cut shapes including: circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, and pentagons (1 set per group)
- Dry erase board, marker, and eraser (1 per student)
- Shape Riddles worksheet
- Plastic bag (1 per group)
- Bulletin board paper (2 large sheets per group)
- Markers (3-4 per group)
- Recycled materials: cardboard paper, cardboard rolls, cardstock, rubber bands, velcro, string, plastic cups
- Glue stick (1 per group)
- Masking or washi tape (1 roll per group)
