Phonics: Reading Suspects! (Gr. K-1)

Description

In this lesson, students will work in small groups to decode a mystery word by selecting from five familiar reading strategies, or Reading Suspects: 1. Fishy Lips, 2. Stretchy Snake, 3. Skippy Frog, 4. Chunky Monkey, and 5. Tryin’ Lion. Students will then program Dash to select the one reading suspect most likely able to help them decode the “mystery” word and demonstrate how to use this reading strategy.

Objectives

  • Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words
  • Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly-spelled one-syllable words
  • Know spelling-sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams
  • Decode regularly-spelled two-syllable words with long vowels
  • Program Dash to launch a ping-pong ball at a selected “reading suspect.”
  • Use the Go app to move Dash Forward to select a suspect. (This option to be used if you do not have a launcher)

Lesson Procedure

  • Class 1: Reading Suspects (30 minutes)
