Informal Writing: Spinning Tales (Gr. 1-2)
Description
In this lesson, students will work in small groups to write a story about Dash’s first day of school and then program Dash to act out their story.
Objectives
- Learn how to sequence a set of instructions as an algorithm in the Blockly app
- Understand that an algorithm is a set of instructions that Dash follows
- Learn the importance of testing, fixing, and re-testing a program
- Work in cooperative writing groups to develop a story from prompts
- Focus on a topic, respond to questions and suggestions from peers, and add details to strengthen writing as needed
- Use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish their writing in collaboration with peers
Lesson Procedure
- Class 1: Writing with a Prompt (30 minutes)
- Class 2: Programming Dash (30 minutes)
