Analyzing Poetry: A Dash of Haiku (Gr. 3-5)
Description
In this lesson, students will work in groups to analyze the word choice, meaning, and tone of various haiku. Working together, they will write an original haiku and then emulate the simplicity of the haiku structure in a related line drawing and program. Students will program Dash to recite and perform the haiku in the Wonder app.
Objectives
- Identify the number of syllables in a haiku (17 syllables in a 5-7-5 structure).
- Identify the elements of haiku (e.g., nature, seasons, contrast).
- Read and analyze the meaning and tone of various haiku.
- Write and illustrate an original haiku.
- Create a Wonder app program to enhance/support their original haiku.
- Program/record custom sounds for Dash to recite a haiku.
- Program Dash to move forward, backward, or turn.
- Program Dash to turn lights and eye ring on or off.
- Program transitions (e.g., time, sensor, button, clap, voice).
